i am looking at restoring my old Orange Prestige frame but am noticing a lot of rust flakes coming out of the tubes and rattling about inside . im just wondering how bad this might be ?

Doesn't sound good, haven't got a lot of experience with rotten frames but if the rust has reached the flaking stage it's gone way past surface rust and can only have weakened the tubes :( , is there any traces of rust breaking through the outside of the tubes ?

If the flakes are not too bad and rust has not reached the outside of the tubes you can still maybe save it by treating the inside of the frame with Kurust then Waxoyl.

I took a bottom bracket out of an old GT Avalanche the other week ..... What fell out was shocking  I actually had to sweep it up!!

Its wall art now

Yeah, probably not wise to trust a frame with a lot of internal rust :(

An old Orange frame thats riddled with rust? How unusual

Halfords stock a few products that claim to stop rust and even repair, to some extent, rusted areas, so if you're looking at cheap and cheerful, take a trip there and see what they have.

I'm guessing that the bottom of your seat tube is FUBAR though as may be your chainstays.

Shame to scrap it so maybe your best bet is to give it to a frame builder who can assess exactly how bad the problem is and what its gonna cost to put it right.

You can't repair rust. The rust is what used to be steel and it's an irreversible process - chemically the same as burning. The treatments are intended to stop it getting worse but if it's weakened it'll stay weakened.
