the distinct flavour derives from the sarsasperilla root - I think its the same ingredient used to give deep heat its charming smell.
it has a sourness to it that is usually counteracted by an abundance of sugar.
a very distinct flavour, but unlike marmite, I think it is an aquired taste, not just love or hate.
when I was a child my father used to drink it all the time, one sip and I had had my fill, I just thought it tasted very funny, but liked the sweetness (of course).
As I got older I began to love it. But still, its one of those you need to be in the mood for.
Serve VERY cold. warm root beer just doesnt cut it!
I think it's akin to the infamous 'parma violets' sweets. Most people srew their face up when they try one and say something like ''it tastes like soap!" I think its a lovely flavour.
It would be crap if we all thought the same thing and liked the same flavours, but sometimes I think people are far too quick to judge root beer.
Interestingly, when it the US a couple years ago, I wasn't able to order root beer in approximately 50% of the places I dined. I thought it was a staple out there... it certainly seemed more popular when I visited the states as a child.
I wonder if they still serve it in US Maccy D's?

I should also add, A&W american stuff is generally quite easy to obtain, and tastes ok. but like all american produce its laced with oodles of HFCS (corn sryup) which not only makes it sickly sweet, but also incredibly bad for you.
