Riding with a cold?

Bad news Mark. :(

I went out when I'd had a cold hanging about for a week or two and felt much better the next day but I probably wouldn't if I was still full of it.

Don't do it. I had a heavy cold, possible slight flu a few weeks ago and thought it had gone. I was out today and felt like death at points on the tough stuff.

Never do sports when you have fever! If you have only a cold, go out but take it easy on yourself ;)

In general if the symptoms are above the neck, ie sinus and sniffles, then you'll be okay with light exercise, but really take it easy.

If your symptoms are in the neck and below, ie sore throat, cough, fever, aching joints etc, then wait until you're feeling better.

is tha because above = probably bacterial
below - probably virus???

todays ride with a cold was ok for me - i just took my time - the real pain was the time spent getting the snot off my bike - i did think about trying to pass it off as a Klein paintjob but went for the washer instead :D

If it's a cold, surely it's virus?

Otherwise, wouldn't there be mileage in antibiotics?

Symptoms below the neck indicate that whichever variation of the cold virus you are suffering from is more advanced than with the less severe symptoms which present above the neck.

The additional stress placed on the body by exercise can weaken it, allowing the virus to further develop and advance. Symptoms, particularly on the chest, can quickly escalate into much more serious conditions like pneumonia.

There are lots of variables to consider though, not least of which is the individual who is feeling unwell.

If in doubt just take it easy and allow yourself to recover properly.
