Reverse rear mech, advice

My Scott "racing" MTB has a XT M750 groupset I recently replaced the front mech with a new M760 which looks nearly identical as I want to keep it near as possble stock /retro, I just sourced a M760 rear mech new in the box for £20 but noticed it is marked as low normal reverse I have googled it and apparently the shifter will now work backwards!! why make this design surly when going on the flat one click per gear change is right and if suddenly you meet a hill you want to change several cogs at once, now it will work the opposite way!

anyone had any experience of this type of Mech

Yes, horrible aren't they? It's like suddenly driving a car with the high gears on the left and low on the right.

It's another silly Shimano gimmick to solve a problem that doesn't exist. When the spring gets old and weakens the downshifts get unreliable. :roll:

That said, I do have one on my tourer, as it makes the bar-end shifter tilt downwards in low gears, so giving more knee clearance when riding out of the saddle. I only need this in low gears, so it is more convenient. If I was doing a long tour in remote areas I'd swap it out for a normal one, though.

I bought it as a spare, haven't fitted it yet, my rear mech is worn but still working, the ebay seller takes returns so can send it back, wanted to get some advice on here.

I have one on the Amplifier, it needs changing as it really is shockingly awful to use. Totally wrong & absolutely useless when you need to rapidly go through the block to a lower gear.

I am actually stumped as to why the boffins at Shimano thought it was a good idea.

:facepalm: Rapid Rise is BRILLIANT! It is designed to shift into lower gears quicker and once you've got used to it, you'll love it. £20 was a bargain for the mech too.

You mean that the mech spring can push it harder than a thumb pushing a shifter? Yep, right.
And what about when the spring gets a bit old?
