Retrobikes of the future ?

If it is down to aspiration I guess the answer for this question should come from bike mad teens, not from a load of middle aged blokes stuck in the past.

 That hit the nail fair and square on the head.

Interesting thread this one, with everyones different views.

I do feel that Dr s was coming across a bit angry to the newbie poiuy1 and i know this site to be a friendly place. Just think the way it comes across as you are having a go at the chap. Any way thats how i saw it.

Really sorry to all if it comes across that way but having re-read the thread I don't think I was the one having a go- certainly not at the poster. He has his beliefs and I have mine. Again, I just don't think that the bike in question will be future classic and I gave the reasons to back up my opinion. Its just my opinion on the bike in question (backed up by others I might add)- there was not a scrap of malace toward poiuy1 in it.
He is the one who got his knickers in a twist and took to having a personal stab. If he had backed up his own reasoning without having resorted to such means we'd be continuing the debate instead of getting sidetracked again. But thats cool- its just another debate about bikes- no need to get angry at all is there :?:

I'd be more than happy to have a beer and talk further about the shortcomings of On Ones with poiuy1 anytime.

Carry on as you were ;)

Ok no worries , i have read it different thats all. Just thought it was a bit off a attack at someone who had there beliefs about a make of bike. Maybe it just came across wrong i can see why poiuy1 reacted like he did.

On Ones are rare? On the moon they might be. If it sells for more than £150 I'll show you a fool. You can buy a new one for less. As for ten years time they will be rare- they are bought as hacks and thrashed to death- a disposable item like a toothbrush or Korean car. Raleigh Mustangs were cheap and are now rare as hens teeth but they don't sell for as much as a decent hot meal when they show up on eBay.
I know they have their fans but classics they ain't. One of the worst frames I've ever riden.
Please don't buy a load of them as a retirement plan dude :?

lol

I do agree on them NOT being rare....ten a penny really, same goes for Cotics. Never ridden either so can't comment on the handling etc. though.

Not being a snob though, TBH some of the Groovy bikes I've seen are way OTT.

At the end of the day own bikes you like....I wouldn't colllect antiques that looked/worked s**t even if they were going to be worth money in the future.

In the interests of impartiality, I would like to ad he was specifically referring to the 853 model and not on-one in general. Whether the 853 is indeed rare or not I have no idea.

I think you we're spot on with that observation. On-Ones, at least the things I've seen here in the states, are crap. On-Ones make Surlys look like Teesdale work. :p

I disagree with you though Si, on your MGB analogy. I think your list of brands that fall back into the shitter value wise, does not include stuff like Fat at all...(why draw the distinction between VRC Yeti and Fat?) I think all the boutique builders bikes will hold some value, but the Konas and Marins and Stumpjumpers and Cannondales and GTs and such, especially the mid range junk, will be worthless after the retro bubble grows up and out of the fad.

Not all us Retro hounds are geezers buying up the brittle high end shit of the past. Look at that Rumpfy guy. Isn't he, like...what? 28 or something? To hear him talk you'd think he was a Repack participant! :p ;)

I see where you are coming from and i agree to an extent. I used brands like FAT, YETi et al as a rough example. Talk to younger bike folk today and they don't know about Fat Chance bikes but they nod sagely when you mention Yeti. I suppose I was refering to the C-26 and its stellar value when I placed them either side of the line. Future value will be governed by the future generation- if that generation has little knowledge or desire for a brand it will fall in value and into obscurity- boutique or not.

I do hope Fat values fall over time- that way I can afford to buy more and more :D :D
