Retrobike Touring.

Re:

I am building a tourer, would XT hubs and Mavic 217/517 rims be ok for light daily touring or should I search for something tougher ?

Re:

I finished my KHS build that I mentioned above.

Me and my partner cycled to Oxford from East London over two days. We camped out in the beginning of the Chilterns and it was lovely.

However, it proved how much lockdown has affected our fitness... Fully loaded up, 40 miles was a slog ahaha

Yeah, just get the thing build and rolling. Those wheels were meant for smashing around in the hills, if anything they are overkill hehe.

Yes, I've done thousands of km of light touring (including dirt tracks and green lanes) on far lighter wheels than that!

I am getting too cautious in my old age, rather than just building it and riding it I worry

I've toured on M231 (36H) for 25 years, your 217/517 will be fine. If you ar eusing XT hubs, as long as they aren't M780 you will be fine. M780 has reduced bearings sizes to save weight and they have proven unreliable in touring circles. M735/737 are bombproof.
