My first MTB was a Saracn Protrax; loved it and even raced it - still have the frame and in the (very slow) process of rebuilding. Def. worth a look.

Marin Bear valley. Tange triple butted cr mo with marin rocstar steel fork. Had one built as MTB and one built as road bike. With 700c wheels, long drop dual pivot brakes fit perfectly. I once did Aberystwyth to Telford on it in 5hrs 40 mins so it's no slouch.
