Raleigh Max Ogre-EZ

Hi everyone,

I wonder if somebody can shed some light on frame sizes of the Raleigh Max Ogre-EZ?

I developed a fondness for this bike after one of my housemates at university bought one in about 1996, its the matt dark blue bike with grey tyres, seat and grips.

At the time I thought it was cool looking, but then I was riding about on a second hand Raleigh Fire Storm at the time which was a bit crummy in comparison! None of us had ever heard of Specialized or Marin back then...it was just bog standard commuters.

Does anybody have any specifications or details relating to sizes? I'm approximately 5' 11", I'm pretty certain they did a 22" version - 23" frames tend to be too high for me normally.

If anybody has any information on the bike in question I'd be most grateful! If all else fails I'll keep my eyes peeled out for a Specialized Stumpjumper or something of similar vintage.

Cheers

Aaron

my mate had one back in the day. right at the bottom of the range, get a stumphumper instead.

As a pub bike - i.e. leave in town, station etc its probably reasonable enough. Going to see a tidy Raleigh Max Eiger variant later today - probably very similar bike bar the colour...

I didn't realise the Ogre-EZ was so low spec. So much for believing my housemate!

Well, got my hands on a Ogre-EZ for a bit of fun!

Blimey is it heavy! I bought it to do up for use as a town bike, pub bike...needs a bit of TLC to get it up and running again. This one is about 20" centre to top with about 31" standover height - which is fine, my Marin Mill Valley is about the same in terms of height. The tyres will almost cetrainly be switched to slimmer road types, these grey ones are incredibly fat (and flat at the moment) they're huge for general commuting and maybe an update saddle (once I've got the seat tube out!) might complete the look...

Some interesting observations: I've never seen one with a sloping top tube before, the only other reference I have is here:

To me this looks like a flat top tube? I wonder if mine is a slightly later model, I know the earlier Ogre Max bikes (such as the Eiger) went for more conventional flatter top tubes. This one has about a 6 degree slope...akin to their later range of Max bikes (an updated frame for the model perhaps?). I haven't checked underneath so no idea if they have any serial numbers...

Well, its a bit of fun to fiddle with on an evening - if anybody has any catalogues circa 96/97 - which is when the model came out I'd love to see some details on it.

Cheers everyone!
