late 96 for the 97 model year is feasible.

i know.... i had some of the previous design back in the day, and a brand new 1996MY bike

it also has V brakes, these are 1997 onwards

you can keep on saying it. ive seen v brakes on bikes dated 94/5. didn't your mother tell you if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all.

Haha! Steady on chaps! No need for fisticuffs!

Sure is an odd mix of components with the threaded steerer fork and vees

So those vees were on it when you bought it?

My 95 Univega has V Brakes but I retrofitted them, not sure when they first appeared on the market though...

Quick look in the Shimano catlogues in the gallery here (awesome resource) doesn't show them before '96 then only for XT and up...

Catalogue here

I don't think Tektro invented them ;)

only things that ive change is the quill and stem because i wanted a it closer to me and the rear tyre because when i was younger i did a lot of skiding. the bike was bought late 96 as in december.
ive never found it odd because they were on the bike when i got it.
ive been searching and emailing all the companys that made the parts on my bike.

i wonder who did invent them !!!

*edit* that catalogue is great im looking at the 1996 one with the break/gear changers like mine :)
thank you for putting the link up

yes i did in the bike shop when i bought my bike. wow chill out whats the need for the hostelity? we are all here to share a passion about our retro bikes. ive taken your opinion and researched it. why can't you accept what ive said.

According to these blokes:

http://www.charnwoodcycles.co.uk/page9.php

Shimano invented them (or were first to mass market) so that means they could not possibly be older than '96, the catalogues are inarguable

- Only result I could find regarding who was first to make 'em, sadly. But with cce's memory and these guys agreeing... My '95 Univega having cantis (originally) I'd say it's a strong body of evidence...

So if we are cool with that, these are most likely '97, as Shimano only offered them in XT/XTR and Tektro will have needed a bit of time to tool up or their reproduction of the design

They must be a retrofit...

But hey! At least they're retro!

ill check the receipt again.
is there any way i can check the serial number?

Don't think so as Raleigh churned out so many bikes!

If there is any Shimano kit on there that was DEFINITELY on there when you bought it, you should be able to date it by a two letter date code, stamped somewhere on the part

Look it up in here:

http://www.vintage-trek.com/component_dates.htm

That should do the trick

right then off to find the part numbers :)

*edit* im scraping the dates untill i can find the actual date of the bike
