Raleigh Gran Sport 1983 - Bringing it back from the dead

Checking in. Paint is a complex one.

That’s why I’m asking as the chrome is pretty shabby also

The chrome on the forks is past it but I have some new chrome forks on the way. To have the originals rechromed was simply not worth it as it would have cost £80++

The chrome to the rear dropouts is good and in the 1983 catalogue the bike has a painted chainstay so my intention is to keep the chrome to the dropout surfaces but not to the chainstay.

Im not sure who is going to paint it yet as the colour will be a problem to match.

I had to get it matched by hand.

Was it you that got those ladies to do a fantastic job of mixing up a tin of touch up paint on your Gran Course and if so, do you have their details?

Re:

After much T Cut and polishing the frame is looking much better and the chrome to the rear stay is looking quite presentable too with just some minor pitting to the top surface.

It MIGHT even be possible to maintain the original paintwork assuming I can get some decent touch up... but I maybe being a little optimistic here...?

I think this colour looks pretty close - so may actually respray after all...

That was me yes. Will see if I can remember.

Re:

Sweet bikes. Can't remember why, but I think the colour was acheived with a pearl base layer over sprayed with the orangy caramel.

It's worth perservering with though, 'cause if you crack it, it's a cottage industry all of its own.

Re:

This is quite interesting - I’m looking forward to what your decision will be!
Personally I quite like the original paintwork - if the correct paint colour match could be found for some touch up - but ultimately it’s a crucial decision

Re:

Please, do not respray. Keep it how it is. Bikes of that age had a life behind them, which has to be respected. I like the patina. It is only one time original, you know. Andthat's now. I mostly do not respray, just polish and than spray with two layers of transparant paint

That’s what I’d do - but it’s his decision!! He bought the bike for parts initially !!
