Raleigh Appalachian rescue

Right...... So i got a headset off of another bike and thought wooo I can finally get a move on with this bike... but no. Even though it's a 1" headset just as I thought the bike was but the cups are too small, they simple fall into the frame?

The original Deore XT(?) top cup was cracked so have to find a replacement but now worried this is some non-standard size?

Please help hahah

Re:

What make/model is the headset you've tried to fit? is it possible the headset is the problem (presume there's no cracks in the headtube)? I fitted a 1" DX to my Appalacioan frame and it fitted fine. I would try another headset before doing anything else. Post up some pic's so we can see the issue as well if you can.
I have a Rock lobster Ti frame that you can just push headset cups in to by hand, there isn't any slack when fitted and have ridden the bike without issue for years so it may not be an issue with your frame.

Right, purists look away!

I finally found a headset that was a snug fit to the frame. Here it is built up and ready to roll, did a test ride and it felt pretty good. Forgive me if the brake looks weird, I took me ages to set it up and at least now it works well haha.

It is single speed, made with some cassette spacers on an 8speed hub and a bodged chain tensioner. I might take 2-3 more links out the chain to make it look tidier. Now, the search for weird coloured parts begins. I do actually own a shell suit in suitable colours.

Also, slight problem with the brake pivots(?) on the fork. One of them is wobbly so I don't know if i can fir a front brake or not.

You have been warned, and well what do you think?

This has got me smiling, I really like the hillbilly looks. Lovely build forks by the way, I hope you will be able to get some brakes mounted to it.

Enjoy the ride!
