pre/post war paint help needed

OK, this is going to be a strange question, but...the pedal arms and crank spiders, front seat post/ rear handle bar mount, front and rear fork ends on my tandem have painted metal, rather than chrome, which I assume was due to price or availability pre or post war. To describe the colour is difficult, but it looks like cadmium plating. This is over bare metal.

Does anyone know what it was, and where if at all it is available? It covers blemishes, that would not polish out enough for chroming.

Cadmium us a funny orange / bronze / brass finish if native iirc. Is your finish some sort of nickel plate?

no, it is silvery, but not Hammerite. You can see it on the frame pic, above the resillion derailleur mount and the rear brake stay and seat stay. Also the crank pics, on the build thread http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... p;t=349069

On the pedal arms? On the forks and stays it only extends about five inches.

Wartime finish was an accepted term for avoiding chrome which was reserved for 'strategic' purposes, galvanic paint was used to protect steel, iirc was sometimes called silver frost. Basically a type of zinc coating painted or dipped, which I believe you can buy in aerosol cans these days.

Educated guess, But I may be wrong, can't really tell from the photos

Cans today are typically called 'galvanising spray':
