Peugeot 653 Athena questions

The external seat tube size on mine is 28mm not 28.6.

I think that's the metric size tubing. Don't quote me on this, but certainly Peugeot used metric sized Reynolds tubesets at some times. What I have been unable to find out is whether they did them in 653. Certainly 753 was available in metric.

28.0 stepped down from the imperial size 27.2 seatpost is 26.8, which fits the upthread evidence from Chat Noir.

My seat tube takes a 26.6 seatpost though, not 26.8.

26.6 is quite feasible if there was ovalisation during fabrication and the post is the top end of tolerances. For example I have an Easton EA90 27.2 that comes up on the vernier as 27.3. How loose is the 26.6?

Well I measured the tube with a seatpost measuring tool at 26.6, so I bought a 26.6 post and it won't fit, too tight, unless the post is stamped wrong, I'll get the very near gauge out later, seems very strange, but if irrc I did go through this before I bought the measuring tool I bought a 26.8, 26.6 and a 26.4. Confused

Over-tightening, fitting of a under-sized pin and general hard life can result in a non circular seat tube, or a ding in it or corrosion, etc, etc. First off, clean, clean, clean. Oily rag and even a bit of fine wet and dry. Don't forget that all the grunge will end up in your bottom bracket, so take precautions. Next check for any visible damage to the inside of the tube. If the tube has been over-tightened, it can probably be gently prized apart with a large screwdriver/cold chisel/ whatever you have to hand that is a close fit with the slot.. Persistent corrosion really needs a reamer in the tube. Either mortgage your house and get the Campag professional kit or take it to a reputable frame builder. Similarly if there are any small dents in the tube.
If you now have a clean tube, but have no bore gauge to test its size, lube up your seat pin and try again.

Re:

Something odd.

I have a Peugeot 531 Pro from 1988. 28 seat tube, seat post 26.4, just checked measurements.

Good luck with this.

Right, mine arrived. Good nick. Not perfect. Better in the pictures, but still decent.

What tools do I need to measure up ?

Here we go measuring tool inserted

But this 26.6 will not go in. So it has to be a 26.4
