So, finally finished restoring the pre 90's marin pine mountain with one small problem - give it some beans and the chain slips from the back end somewhere - it's a new sram chain but I used the old cassette in order to keep the costs down, could this be the cause?

almost certainly - probably doing it in 6/7/8th gear only I would suspect. Try 1/2/3/4th gears and they'll probably be OK - if this is the case then it's the cassette.

If it doesn't matter what gear is selected then that will be a new freehub you'll be needing.

think so too. i had the same problem on my recently finished marin ift. switched to another rear wheel and problem gone.
i hope i can repair the freehub body without repalceing it. they are absurdly expensive...
