If it's steel then get it blasted. They should be able to adjust the pressure if you're worried. If you can find a firm locally that does it then plastic media strip is your safest bet but it's not that common.
We do it in our paint shop at work and they can remove the print from a coke can without damaging the metal. Very impressive.....if you can find one!
