if you go to these trail centres eg Glentress and the Welsh ones all you bloody see is middle aged idiots with a serious face on bouncing up and down on thenm in a flat carpark, and what you normally find the bike they are on is either a Specialzied or a 5 and it does my head in

Why do you care so much about what (and how) other people ride? Must be very tiring.

I agree......but there is something funny about a guy, say 39, getting his grey specialised stumpjumper (model number........... 464837463645365463545432156545454545645454564632746374576235427653465327654526745276457624587623161453547654 out of his white transit combi, clipping in and circling the vecinity bouncing about pulling a funny face!, they all do it !, why ?

Ha Ha....something i notice too, but clearly not with the same vengance!

Thanks a lot  I've been out for a lovely ride today, we did just over 90 miles and I wiped the floor with somebody I don't particulary like who used to be able to do the same to me

So last week London Marathon in 3hrs 44seconds ( yes I was gutted ), this week I wipe the floor with my cycle club nemesis  so just when I'm thinking not too bad for a 39 year old I may even go out for a quick pint to celebrate tonight

You go and depress me by calling 39 middle aged  I'll just go and shuffle off, try and find my slippers whilst trying to fend off thoughts of a mid life crisis

sorry i got the price wronge with that frame, a mate of mine got one from him a few years back, it was very good...

I used to live in North Wales and new the trails like the back of my hand, I often used to bait the 'bounce it in the car park' crowd on my 15 year old GT. :)

That was not really my point......, Im 33 and would like to class middle age at say 42. Its pretty clear you are fitter than 90% of all 20 year olds!

Well.... Had a go on my pals new Blue Pig today and s'orite. Not much give in the steel but quite like the frame angles. Felt a lot like a full suss without the rear bounce. Would like to try one of those new Pace frames to compare. Still prefered my 5, but that's just me.

Can't really get my head round modern hardtails as I'm used to retro ridgid bikes. Think I'll stick with my Vit-T for non full suss duties. :D

The Pig is bit more hardcore than a standard ht trail frame. Ride it hard out the saddle n give it some stick and it will be in it's element

rc300 you are exactly right, thats how i would describe mine, i thought it had alot of flex compared to especially my retro hardtails

Hmmmmm, don't know.... I liked it but still think a full suss would let you hammer more if that's your bag. The point of hardtail or hard everything for me is that it lets you feel the trail more, makes you pick your lines and makes for a more technical ride.

Was up at Gisburn forest today on my 5. Last time I was there was the Retrobike ride on my Clockwork and it felt like a different course. IMO the Ragley (or an On-One for that matter) feels like a tool to do a job and lacks soul. I'm sure my old Evo 4 felt more 'alive'. Maybe I need to ride my pals new bike more. Would like to try a 'high end' modern hardtail like the Pace to see if I got on with one of those better. :?

The pig design has loads of nods to shitty, northern gritty conditions which will soon take their toll over winter on a full susser.

Don't have the Evo anymore, chopped it in for the 5. I know what you mean about the design features. I like that natty little cut out on the chainstay and will be interested to see if it works. Must admit though, had my 5 since the end of 2006 and it's survived every winter since then. The only part that's got snotty is the headset.

I think the forks you choose on a hardtail must make one hell of a difference. My Evo had Pace RC40's and I'm still to find a plusher set of forks (including the Fox Floats on my 5). My pal's running some burly Bombers that work but are not very fluid. Will be interested to see how it rides when he gets the Rockshox Revalations he's after. ;)
