Now then, what to do about this dent. I've seen the rolling method (pinching the tube in a tube-width hole in two blocks of wood/metal) but I can't decide if it will damage the nickel if its wood (I'm sure it would if it was metal).

Tell me why it's a terrible idea to drill a pinhole in the underside of the tube and hammer it out by inserting something thin and stiff into the hole (like a 2-3mm allen key). The hole would be underneath, out of sight, and the dent is in the middle of the tube well away from the stress areas near the welds.

You could always try a paintless dent removal company. They would have to have access from hole drilled underneath but I guess you could always get that spot welded after?

I’d discuss it thought before drilling!

Alternatively how about filling with weld, smooth it out
out and powdercoat?

I did this with a Saracen kili which had similar dent in top tube.

In certain light and angle you could see a mark but this was one of my first proper builds and I should have spent more time sanding and prepping weld area before PC.
 
I hate dents so can empathise with wanting to do something about it. If I was keeping it nickel I'd likely learn to live with it or put a sticker over it.

You would almost certainly make the situation worse trying that method, trying to knock the dent out through such a small hole you would end up with the dent as it is but with a nipple in the center of it, you will make it worse!
Dent removal experts drill holes in the top & pull the dent out, if you want to keep the frame shiny get it fixed professionally, even then I don't think that can be removed to the point it's invisible, get some pro advice or fill it & paint it!

Don't worry, taken on board.

Took delivery of my next project and (partly) donor bike on Friday, the ProFlex in my signature. The Manitous will need a full build before they're ready to go on this (started by ordering a 14" 5mm hex), but I was able to steal 2 spokes and the Onza Racing Porc 2.1s to replace the rubbish the P7 came with.

I've ordered the fluro Orange decals which are in the post, so I've not cabled up the rear of the bike yet, but I was able to briefly turn a wheel on the bike for the first time today!

Oh, and the first and only new bought part arrived the other day, in shot here, a new 8 speed cassette...

It looks like a mountain bike again now. Sitting on just rims for so long it looked a little too much like a hybrid...
