I got a barn find, could not resist to take it home even its a 20,5 size frame, way to big for me as I´m only 5´8 (173cm) short.

It sure was covered whit moss from standing years against a building.
From the color it looks like a 1991 model, but components are not right as the deraullers are Shimanos GS200

They say its a 1992... but other parts don´t say mutch, rims are same for both years. Left brake handel as shifter seem to be the GS200 to but right side is changed to 10 year never Altus EF20 combo brake/shift handle. Crank is also a C10 on right side and a miss matching non brand on left side

Then I gave it a good wash

The color has faded quit a bit by the years standing agains the barn wall

So would you say its a 1991 or a 1992?
It needs new wires and outers for sure, the Crank BB is shoot, rear wheel has lots of play in it. Would you do any to it?

Re: Old MARIN Muriwoods mtb

wow, I love the two tone paint effect from the light damage.

personally I'd be looking at what condition the major parts are in. i'd be inspecting that wheel first and if it's fixable with a clean, new bearings, and grease I'd be tempted to fix her up (provided both wheels are straight).

I would go with complete new cables and outers, new BB, maybe new headset, new brake pads, new tyres & tubes, new cassette and chain, new grips, and possibly seat. i would also source correct crank set and shifters. Strip everything, clean, lubricate and re-assemble, she'll be as good as new but this time with custom paint.

Re: Old MARIN Muriwoods mtb

I would never re paint it it looks soo original and cool like this haha

Give it a full wash and degrease and just make it ridable again. Will be a nice bike.

Well thanks, I think it looks kind of cool also. The wheels seem straight, have to take the rear hub apart for inspection. For the crank I was thinking if finding a matching left crank would do whit a new BB, and for shifters local store has some NOS Acera shift/brake level combos in stock that are from mid/late 90´s that would properly do?
If rear wheel is ok, then sure new cables and outers for sure, new brake pads, or complet brakes, have a ok old set in the drawer that are aluminium, not some sort of composit/plastic that the current. Grips, yes old are bad, seat, have to see. For tires I have a OK set to put on it.
Will post as I have time to look further on it. Have 3 old MTB projects at the moment, 2 other are from the late 90´s/early 2000.

Re: Old MARIN Muriwoods mtb

It is in the 1991 catalogue.
Have a look at my signature if you want to check out mine.
A look at your frame number could clear things up.
Mine was produced late in 1990 if i remember correctly...it's been a while since i've seen it.

Thanks, and yours look very nice

Yes, the color is in the 1991 catalogue, but the parts on the bike are mostly like what you find in a 1992 catalogue...a late 1991 frame that got 1992 parts?
Have to check the frame number. Where do I find what year what number is?

Re:

Thanks again for the info!
For the deraullers, that are stated just GS200 (M200)on the bike, its the Exage text that is confusing in the catalouge. I did find this page: http://www.fa-technik.adfc.de/Herstelle ... html#91mtb and it says just GS200 and group is M200 so thats sorted then. I just cant fint a Exage 200 group in the listing, a bit odd.

For other parts the crank its a odd bird, FC-CT10, that is a 1993 group. Its olso a 170mm crank in a big frame, or is it comon whit just 170mm cranks back then? But as the left side is a non brand odd one also, something needs to be done. As before mainly thinking to try to find a matching left to the CT10, that if all are 170mm at that time.

I have to look into the frame number.
Edit: Fram number is:A906 88929 (or 80929, second digi in th last 5 is very shallow stamped and lots of aint on it) So from the link its a 90 frame and the 6 stays for a Muriwoods.

Did open upp the rear hub today, and its a FH-HG20 (a GS200, not a Exage300 as stated for a 1991) hub By the way, and its not reparable sadly. So a new hub or wheel is needed rear. The front is ok and smooth. Both rims are in ok condision, would just need some fine tuen to be straight.
For hubs, is 20€ bad for a exage fh-hg50 NOS hub? A NOS fh-rm40 would just be 12€ where a NOS Deore LX fh-m550 is 29€

Pics later, as I have time to resize them.

Re: Old MARIN Muirwoods mtb

As far as the hubs are concerned if that's what's available to you i would go either with the FH-HG50 or the M550 simply because they match the front lookwise. I guess 20€ for a new hub is ok. RM40 is a different design. But technically all three would do fine i guess.

I think i may still have a M300 crank from around 1991 somewhere..if you are interested i could search through my boxes.

Re: Old MARIN Muirwoods mtb

The rear hub.

It do look a bit more promecing as I did clean up, but even its work to change a hub, considering I need a new cone and cover + bearing balls (the balls I think I do have at home) I think a new hub is worth. The surface in the hub has marks so might not be that long lived. What do you think?

For the crank, sure I´m intrested! It has 110BCD for the outer chainrings, right? I hapen to have a set of chainrings from a RSX triple crank, 26,36,46, that are very good in condission that would proberly fit. Came from the OEM 1995 Giant CFR3 crank that didnt come off in one piece from the BB spinder...a sad story.

Anyway I did find some nice thing in the drawer myself, a LX M-567 rear derauller and a set of BBB rollerboys, here next to the stock GS200

I cant help to really like the details in stickers and finish of the frame
