We went home today, 100K from where I’ve spent the last 16 days resting up after my latest worn out body part repair. Yesterday was the first day that they said it was OK to drive. I stopped for gas 25K from home. I wanted to wash the road salt off my windshield. Jeez, the blue stuff at the gas station for cleaning windshields was a block of ice.

Then we drove to our storage unit to put away summer clothes and get out the rest of our winter stuff. Jeez again. There was a Lake effect snow storm about a week ago. The storage unit it is about 10K from Lake Superior, on a hillside, facing south and 200 meters higher than Lake Superior. The blizzard out of the north, off the big lake, piled the snow up in a big roof drift. Then it got above freezing, then it rained causing the snow to avalanche off the metal roof blocking the access doors with shovel bending snow.

We dumped 15 kilograms of salt on the top of the snow by our access door in hopes it will keep it from being frozen shut for 4 months. I’ll keep dumping salt on it until it opens. The roof avalanche made a lean in the power pole. I wanted to use my truck as it has 4 wheel drive. I dug the drivers side door out and started it. I let it run for 2-3 hours with the heat on high.

I shoveled and pried off enough snow to give me a small opening so I could see. After the 2-3 hour warm up I took off, it was extremely slippery as it has raining, and jammed on the brakes. Even thought the antilock brakes were pulsating the blanket of snow came off over the front. The bed was still covered but good enough. Never work if you don’t have to.
