i think you have kind of missed the point a bit. i think john posted this up as a kind of "look what he wants for that" sort of think. i think everyone knows it is overpriced. the discussion is really about "why do up a bike like that"
£100 really isnt peanuts. it is more than my monthly disposible income and i know i am not alone when i say that. i have never in my life spent £100 on a night out. the thought of it makes me feel a bit queasy really...
i do believe someone on here picked up a tange prestige frame, nos for £40, there's always a bevy of nos saracen frames on ebay for £20 or 30 or so
Its not the original post thats being commented on by so many people, its obvious why it was flagged originally, a bit of fun and finger pointing of which I too, am guilty on occassion
The fact that such a frame has drawn so much attention is what I cannot understand, its the debate of the century. Its also drawn out people suggesting something akin to anything less than a 1997 Merlin with full XTR is only suitable for the skip, which I dont think is the sole point of this site.
We can only say something is overpriced if it fails to sell at any given price. To me, yes, it is expensive for what it is, but its not stratospheric. You may also consider it overpriced but you cannot possibly claim to speak for every potential buyer. This is why a dead animal in a fish tank can fetch millions of pounds at auction, marketed as "contemporary art". I wouldnt buy it even if I had the money, but someone will.
I can see how someone might think that a Raleigh product from that era would be collectable, someone with say, less knowledge than your average enthusiast, or perhaps someone who doesnt care about cost, they just want it for sentimental reasons.
It was not my intention to offend anyone by saying £100 is peanuts, merely that it is a relatively low amount in modern terms, an amount which many people, if not the majority, are able to afford.
Overall, I think it just struck me as a waste of time to nit pick at each others tastes. Yes, as IDB1 pointed out, a forum is for discussion but at what point does a discussion turn into a fruitless argument?
All the users here are different. Different tastes, means, history, riding ability and just about anything else we can name. If someone wants to build only Ti bikes with XTR, thats up to them. I'd give the same freedom to a guy who pays £150 for a Mustang frame, it's his/her money afterall.
