New retro

about 5' 10" 32" leg. Erm yeah should really be thinking about that.... the links I have posted are just theoretical at the mo. Having said that I do tend to prefer a smaller frame with long seat post.....

How often does stuff like that Orange come up for sale on here
You won't often see a bargain like that Clockwork, and if you want to stick to rigid forks you won't find a much better bike. But having said it was a bargain, that's all about condition. If you're not too fussed about such superb condition, a Clockwork or a C16R should always cost less than £200 which is superb value for money. The only drawback is the 1" head tube, which is a little restrictive if you would like suspension at some point. As is the Orange geometry, which is designed for their own relatively short forks. No great problem with say a Pace RC35, but there aren't that many short-travel, 1" steerer forks around.

The Lava Dome is a 1994 size 20, designed for height 6-2 and upwards. He says the (original) gears and brakes are all to hell, which is commendably honest, so it might be cheap, less than £100.

The Cinder Cone is a 1995 size 17 still with its original dark blue paint, but with 1997 decals, so presumably the original decals got shabby and were replaced. Size 17 is intended for height 5-4 to 5-10. All-new cheapish Deore kit, so could make over £200, but not a very good advert, so could be less.

Other than the paint, the 94 Lava Dome and 95 Cinder Cone frames are very similar in specification, fairly good quality double-butted generic 4130. The 94 was a Tange tube, but I wouldn't put much store by any difference between basic Tange and generic 4130.

Of those three bikes, the Clockwork is the best, and the best fun to ride, no question. Put a Clockwork up against an Explosif though and I would say Explosif. But so it should be for the money.

All just 'in my opinion', obviously. Oh, and if you're 5-10, you need at least a size 19 Orange and size 18 Kona.

Hey Anthony thanks for that, some really useful info there. Went to my local 2nd hand bike shop at lunhctime and they had an orange P7 looked to be 19" maybe slightly bigger frame. Gears etc looked really shabby though and the frame was some kind of brushed metal finish which had quite a bit of surface rust on - they wanted £200 for it!

You saw an *orange* P7 and you managed to get out of the shop without buying it? Wow, you got some mean willpower there Dylan!

Being as I'm from Hove, I have a dark suspicion that the bhafc bit of your name could imply that you're somebody who wastes their Saturday afternoons not mountainbiking.

If so, which 2ndhand shop was that?

You've got far better eyes than me - 91-93 then, presumably 93 judging from the shape. Seller thinks the paint is original, which is what misled me, but it seems that it can't be as 95 is the only year they had that colour. Still don't really understand, as they didn't import size 17 in 1993.

If is 93, I wonder if it's a charcoal grey US model like this? [scan courtesy Mechagouki]

Yes you are right about my name, it does mean I waste some of my Saturdays following Brighton.

So the P7 for £200 could be a good buy then?? How much do you reckon it would cost to re do the clearcoat on the frame? Did I read that they came with deore LX as std originally??

BTW here is my Marin:
