I need to build a new bike for my lad, currently he has a Dawes Espoir CX bike with 24inch wheels. My lad is clearly ready for 26in/700c.
I don't want to spends £££s so looking to salvage parts from the Dawes (Drop Bars, shifters, mechs) and possible use some other stuff I have spare, e.g. 105 Triple Chainset and XT Rear Mech, XT Disc Wheels (could use with V-brake, as the brake surface is flat).
Scouring Ebay, and I have my eye on a few bikes/frames. I would prefer to avoid a true road bike, just to make things a bit more versatile, i.e. taking the CX on mud, off road etc.
Here is my plan, I am looking for comments, feedback, other suggestions.
Carrera Subway (26in Hybrid, Discs, Rigid Forks, small/womens 16 inch size)
105 Chainset (this is a triple, but plan to fit N/W single, or small middle double - its from a Tricross, is it likely to fit?)
Drop Bars from the Dawes (he wants drop bars, they should fit, I may have to change stem based on reach)
Choice of mechs/cassettes:
Currently he has Claris brifters, Claris Mech and 8 speed chainset (with double up front)
I could keep the 8 speed shifter/8 speed mech, or
Use a 10 speed XT mech with the 8 shifter (would this function?), or
Use a 10 speed XT mech, 10 speed cassette and opt for a bar end shifter - this gives a good range on a 1x10 setup.
Then the only other thing to worry about is drop bar compatible disc calipers, seats/posts etc can all be utilised from elsewhere.
So should this all work? I don't want to have to fork out for more parts really. Any other ideas.
The final product should end up like a mini Salsa Fargo - LOL!
