Never mind the speed.....INSURE IT!

Hi there,
I claimed recently for lost items I sent via the PO on a "standard" 1st class. It's fairly painless - you get a lost post form from your PO, fill it in and get some proof of how much it's worth (Ie an e-bay listing) and send it all back. I got a cheque back within a couple of weeks.
Item was only worth about 8 quid but after having to refund the customer I thought sod it if I'm gonna lose out cos the PO are useless...
Cheers,
A.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE insure the stuff you post and b*ll*cks to the speed of postage. Use the money you'd blow on next day delivery to insure the gear instead by slowcoach mail.

IMO it's down to the buyer / seller to agree what their priorities are between themselves and select the most appropriate postage method.

That's a fair point so I suppose what I'm aiming at is for sellers like myself to have a personal policy or inclination to do it. Sort of leading from the front by example, like the fact I always have a fortnight's " no questions " return of goods to avoid just plain hassle or the anguish of different people's view of " excellent condition. "

Is there anything that can be done if the seller doesn't have proof of sending ?
I recently bought something in here that didn't show. Seller said he would look for receipt but I never heard back despite several PMs.

Yup...learned my lesson now.
Paid £60 for some shifters on Ebay for a member whose paypal was frozen at the time, sent them off first class but never rec'd .... sent two packages to the same person on the same day and the day before, both arrived no problem.
£60 out of pocket now, trying to help someone out :(
First time I have had anything lost in the post...guess I had been lucky up till then.

& beware of this/the "returned empty box" number.

A mate sent something out in the post, was paypal payment for covering the cost, on ebay.

Anyway, they claimed it wasn't as described,
then claimed the funds & froze matey's account holding the money.
They then sent the package back, without its contents...

He said he would never use paypal again, a bit rash BUT we could see why.
I think in the end somehow he did get money back? But wasn't best pleased.

The item was a £400 mobile phone, not a bit off bike bling.
But story is worth sharing.
