The rear brake is far more interesting

Unfortunately your frame has a hoofing great crack in the headtube and looks like its already been repaired by somehow welding a headset cup in place.

Or loads of epoxy.

Although very similar to MRC, not quite the same. Sure someone knows though..
The brake pad mounts look close, but on th emrc it looks like they extend to the outside.

They do look similar. But, as you mention, the pad mounts are different, and the brake on my bike doesn't have linear springs.

My current guess is a Schwinn Moab.

That's what I'm leaning towards as well. When I've asked about the frame in other fora, some people have been sure it's a Homegrown. But I've yet to find a picture of a Homegrown that's an exact match (despite diligent google searches). So it makes sense if it's something similar, yet different. Also, I have just placed a bid on a '98 Moab, which, except not having a canti bridge, looks almost identical.

I'm calling it a Moab. I picked up this '98 one yesterday, and except for the canti bridge it's the same thing.
