Re: My Marin Bear Valley 1990 Project

Looking at the position of that breaker bar.... you did welly it the right way? the drive side shell is a left handed thread and should wind out clockwise.

Re: My Marin Bear Valley 1990 Project

I suspect you'll be able to hacksaw that out - and if you're careful, you may not even foul the threads.

What sort of penetrating oil did you use - I've found plusgas has been pretty effective. And as the other reply, not wanting to do the whole granny / eggs thing, but you were turning the right way, weren't you?

Ha ha ha hah hah hah  ➡️
Need to really rub it in now

The best thing to do would be to unscrew it not tighten it up  ;)

Anyways... faced with what you have now, I'd be tempted to chop into it with a hacksaw also.

Worst case isn't the cup alloy? Some folks on here have disolved out seatposts with caustic soda, that might work as a last resort.

Re: My Marin Bear Valley 1990 Project

Excellent, glad it came out ok without needing to resort to drastic measures.

Probably the original BB there complete with quarter centuary vintage dried up grease, plus any water mud and rust that has found its way through the seals over the years. Worth parting with a few £ for peace of mind of a new un.

Even if you went through and made a line through the thread it would still screw in if you were careful :?
