same comments were picked up again in this months STW by DW. I've got welder friends who work for B.A (airline not the A-Team :LOL: ) & he was mega impressed by early merlin welding :)
... not that I'm picking on any1s unseen welding talents :roll: ... just that as mentioned previously above, thin tubed bikes can be a more specialist job :)

I haven't read whats been said in the article but the welding on bike frames is one step away from making the tea to a decent welder :?

There's welders and then there's welders :) the bloke who welds cars in the garage down the road is a mechanic who can stick a few bits of plate steel together :? in 99% of cases he'll have no qualifications at all :shock:

Then there's the general welder who has probably done an apprenticeship and gone to college on day release for a couple of years to get his level 1 and 2 city and guilds and spends his time welding gates, bridges and general structural steelwork :)

Then there's real welders :) The top welders are coded pipe welders who work within the Nuclear, petrochemical and aerospace industries who can weld anything you put in front of them :) who for the last 2 years have been sitting in various trenches dug accross the countryside welding the new gas pipeline because the money was so silly :D

The welding on Merlins etc. is very nice but it should be because its a single run fillet weld ( and its all they do ) :? where there's no pressure on you as its not being tested :shock: its the first type of welding you learn after you've mastered a cup of tea :)

I could teach any one of you to weld to the quality on a Merlin within a week :) and if I couldn't it would be because you have the dexterity of a baboon not because its hard :LOL:

How many of you have got frames where a weld ends with a small indentation and a tiny pinhole ? lots I'd guess and thats because it was welded by a baboon who should still be making the tea :)

You might have gathered this gets on my T*TS slightly :LOL:

Anyone got a jig lying around? Lets do a tubeset group buy then it's round to Jones' house for a welding course. :idea:
 
Got to agree with Jones, the quality of welding in the bike industry leaves a lot to be desired, even most of the 'high end' stuff.

I've got all my own gear in a purpose built van so have T.I.G, M.I.G, M.M.A and good old fashioned Oxy+Accetylene gear all ready to go if anyone has a makeshift workshop we can use or just an open area as I have a big tent I use to :)
