Can they be taken to the next level? Dial gauges?

In the world of DIY loudspeakers, they can often be amazing and beat a commercial design costing multiple times more. Is it the same in the wheel trueing world?

Hi Joe

That is well worth £12, it looks very well made, too. Not worth your time and effort to try and make one for less.

I'd suggest buying (online through his site, it's probably still less than £20) Roger Musson's book and read it thoroughly; this will explain not only how to build wheels but why he designed the stand and its advantages over expensive, commercially-available ones. You'll also learn that wheelbuilding is not magical, secret and difficult but is just a logical and iterative process.

Hopefully you'll also realise that your new stand is already at the right level and doesn't need upgrading (clue from the book: you are just guaging wheel truth, roundness etc. it doesn't need measuring. Dial guages just make stands look flash and give an image of accuracy that's more than achievable - and quicker to use - with what you have there).

Possibly the only minor improvement would be to paint the stand white and the guages black for contrast, as suggested by Roger.

Good luck with wheelbuilding, let us know how you get on.

Kevin.

In terms of painting it white. What's the deal - the whole stand or just the base?

Any of you guys bought his new book? Wonder if the stand design stays the same.

Dial gauges 🤣. You need to be more analogue.....thats what the bit of wood at the bottom is for!

^^
Dial gauges are only essential if you always wear a Park branded blue t- shirt on your youtube channel in front of the big Park toolboard!😉

The human eye is accurate enough, and if your eyes are no good, a dial gauge is still a chocolate teapot.

Of course if you are charging for your time, you need to convince your customers you are more akin to a Surgeon than a Burger Flipper😁

Just buy the book, Joe, it's not much in the big scheme of things and it's a nice way of saying thanks to Roger (I've no connection to him). Yes, the updates may just include new hub types etc and thus not be very relevant to Retrobikers but the basic info about wheel-building will still be there and this what you need.

Kevin.
