Mtn. Klein I used to own

I sold this over a year ago to a guy in Portland for $600. I thought it was a good deal for both of us, but I never thought he'd try to resell it for over two thousand! Is there any way that this bike is actually worth that much? I know that the value of these things are determined by what people will pay for them, but I've never seen a Mtn. Klein fetch too much over a grand.

Somehow a lot of people seem to think that if it's a KLEIN it's worth high price... then add "retro, rare, kult, Grafton, Ringle" etc to your listing and all of a sudden it's right on par with pure gold :p I never got that, it seems to be the same with all things 1980ies IBM (I'm a vintage computer guy hehe) ;-) Honestly I think your 600 USD was a bit on the low side, but 2300 USD? No way, at least not IMHO... no offense, of course (and I just found out I'm a complete tool!) :)

Re:

Sadly it seems that your price was on the low side. It's always a bummer to do bad deals.

I haven't really seen that many Mountain Klein's for sale but it's a classic Klein and I have never seen that color scheme before. So, the price the seller wants for it now doesn't seem to be all that unrealistic.

As for the high prices on Klein's in general....well, they where the top of the line back in the days when they were new and cost way more than average bikes......so no mystery really why they are the most sought after today, and therefore command high prices.

Other high class products from back in the days like Fat, Yeti and Merlin (and more) also command high prices today for the exact same reason.

It's actually pretty simple.

Actually I posted photos of it on this site when I first acquired it. And it sat for months on ebay and craigslist before finally selling at the asking price of $600

I feel confident in saying that you wold probably have sold the bike within hours if you had put it on here for that price.

I do understand though that it's a real bummer to do a bad deal. We have all done that from time to time.

Don't expect it to sell at that price though. That seller is notorious for overpriced bling that gets relisted and relisted.

Hahaha!

I think you came out ahead at $600

As mentioned in yout previous post...it sat on eBay and CL before selling. If a Klein sits on CL for more than 2-3 days the price is too high.

You and I spoke about this bike a lot and I actually thought that given the condition of the frame your price was a smidge high. I think Sal just ups the price by a factor of 4-5x and then settles for 1.5-2x in the end. That's his business model.

A much nicer MK sold (to me) on eBay a month ago for $1100. It was brand new and had an amazing build.

IMO $1k is about the sweet spot for a cherry MK, $500 or so for one that's in rough or fair shape, and then anything in between.

I can't wait to see you flip it for $1k
