Mtn. Klein I used to own

MKs are a bit undervalued in my opinion. Although many were built, not many have survived in good condition. The one I bought is rather special as it has a front mounted roller cam brake which I've never seen. It came with a matching fork which is also cool. I think they could be worth more in the future, but most people find them boring compared to MC1 and MC2 bikes. So, I'm happy having paid $1100 as it's brand new and has never seen any dirt.

Looking at sales prices over the past few years only a handful broke the $1000 barrier and most didn't reach $600. You can also point out that many people confuse them with Pinnacles which by most accounts are worth $300-400 max, so that doesn't help.

The MK that belonged to the OP of this thread is a very nice and unusual color and is an early one to boot. But the condition was not great and some of the parts were not original, or at least not per the original spec. I think had he cleaned it up, taken better photos, replaced a few parts and let it fly on eBay it would have gone for $750-900.

The components were at least mostly period correct, but the paint had a few sizable chips and a very large scrape on the head tube that made me not want to put too much time into a rebuild. I originally purchased it just to see what it felt like to ride a really old fully rigid aluminum bike on the trails. My final verdict was that all of my joints and spine have greatly underestimated the value of suspension forks, and I'll stick with my Yo Eddy for now. Anyway, the price was right for the Mtn. Klein at around $200-$300 when I bought it, and after riding it I was happy to clean it up a bit sell it to someone that can appreciate more than me.

Re:

the size of the frame is important to me when I look at a possible buy, it can be the holy grail of bikes, but if I cant ride it, its useless to me. the priceless bike is the one you've always dreamed of - and it fits
of course, it would also have to be a k l e I n :xmas-cool:
