Modern stuff on retro bikes

Words are defined by their usage, so if "we" use retrobike to describe (mainly) 80s and 90s mountain bikes then it is the dictionary that has to change.

The P20 has always been built to ride. Its got the old stuff, threaded 1" headset/forks/stem, old skool bars, saddle, seatpost. Yet it has splined cranks and bb, modern goretex cables and its just turned tubeless using the Stans kit and some modern Conti tyres. Once this bloody cold has gone i'll be able to tell how the tubeless system works on it

p.s. someone tell me modtro is a word and I haven't just made it up.

Who cares if it's a 'proper' word, I like it :D
Its far worse than that i fear. I think it all started with that stupid advert for the Nissan Micra. Clicky ➡️

Couldn't you have p.m'd me first

I have huge respect for retro purists and would love to own a few totally original bikes........but for now i am using modern parts. Saying that though i'm going back to fully rigid...........a lot of bike shop guys i know who are sick of selling the latest doodar are getting more purist bikes as a reaction to talking modern tech all day with customers, it's nice to go ride on something that doesn't remind you of work so much...........

Kinda like the whole 'Kit Car vs Classic' argument. Owned a kit for a while and my dream car is a Sebring kit version of an Austin Healey. Have no interest in an original, as I could not be ars*d with the maintenance and terror of scratching a mint example - what I do want is something that looks the same but drives better.

Plenty of classic purists out there that hate kits, but I am more mellow - I say good luck to them for throwing fortunes at 50-yr old cars and keeping them going, respect due in spades, but it does not interest me at all. Similarly there are kit owners out there that try to make their cars look authentic.

Long as we all respect each other's right to do what they want with our toys then there is no issue. My Kona is a real mix and match and will remain that way - it means that I have kept hold of something I blew my student loan on 14 years ago and I can continue to use it. The beauty is that it is a quality frame that is worth keeping and I could not buy another bike for the money it has cost to update it.

Oh, and it is always good to have something around the house that you have had longer than you have known your wife, keeps you grounded somehow! Sorry about the long incoherent post!

didn't nissan make up the word modtro to describe the micra?

I have a mix of old and new to make my bike work the way i want it to.
the oldest part has to be the xt thumbies running 8 speed and the newest is probably the 2007 xt rear mech.
i'd love to keep it purely retro, but things wear out and i also like to use the bike.

Agreed with that. I've an old steel Marin. I prefer to repair stuff rather than bin it - so I keep the 5-arm chainset, oldish forks etc. However I'm not prissy about modern rear mechs as they all simply wear out with time and I'm not running a museum piece.

I'm pleased to be running Panaracer Smoke /Darts again because they work well and make me feel good.

My bike is a 2002 Titus Racer-X, so not a recent bike but surely not a vintage bike (yet!). So I consider this ride as a modern bike ;)
Got some old skool parts on there:
- Ringle H20
- Altek brake levers (and yes, I do need another set, preferably in silver)
- Proshift v-brakes
- DT hugi wheelset (came of my older Klein)
Before I had a plastic cage, XT levers and XTR-V's, the 950 series
(hmmm... those xtr brakes are actually better ;) )

Maybe some think that older parts on a newer bike is strange, but for instance the H20: this a a very nice water bottle cage that looks good on any new bike and works great as well.
