Mavic Open 4 cd rusted eyelets

I've recently bought two oldish pairs of wheels with Open 4cd rims. In both cases the velox tape was stained with surface rust from the eyelets. After removing the tape I've oiled these up a bit and cleaned them off. Is this a known problem and are the eyelets more prone to failure or is it a cosmetic problem?

I'm still riding daily on my 1988 Mavic MA40 rims with all 72 eyelets corroded. Both wheels still running true, no problems. Cosmetic only, I'd say.

I recently had a mavic ma2 rimmed wheel is for truing. One eyelet was trying to esape from the rim. The rim is scrap and it shows corroded eyelets can and do fail. Luckily though I found a nos MA2 rim at freeman cycles. Lucky find I think.

At least the customer has a wheel that matches the front on his original hubs now.

Keep those eyelets oiled.

My Gp4's are a tad rusty, running just fine and dandy. Bit of oil can't do any harm though eh?
