I bet you don't need a new groupset! A new chain plus cable inners and outers will make the shifting good as new. Flush the shifters through with WD40 as the factory grease tends to harden and clog them. Most Shimano stuff is tough as old boots - there are plenty of people here (me included) riding with 25 year old mechs and shifters!

The frame number is under the bottom bracket. Your bike is from around 1999-2000 at a rough guess.

New Tacx jockey wheels a few quid - or alternatively find a 7/8/9 speed rear mech on here for £10-15.

I see what you mean on the chainset, the outer ring does look worn - amazing as it's steel! With those Alivio chainsets you have to bin them when worn. A nice M563 Deore LX would fit fine and save some weight - say £25 if you look on here. Definitely a new cassette is needed too (7 speed still available new). It looks like the poor thing has been ridden for ages with a desperately worn chain.

A modern groupset won't fit as the rear wheel is 7 speed. 8-speed on would have been forward compatible. There are workarounds, but costs start to spiral.

Personally I'd go with some secondhand bits and tidy it cheaply while giving a minor upgrade.

Even though pictures are not very generous, I reckon it is a 1998 Palisades Trail, from stickers, fork and cranks. 1998 Alivio cranks were already 4-arm.

These came in this polished look and a gloss red. The gloss red one was my first real MTB and I want one back at some point, but only in gloss red.

If I was you, I'd try to get some late 8-speed LX or XT parts. They are fairly cheap these days, pretty functional and durable. STX-RC is not too shabby either.

But first of all, take the bike apart, clean it, dismount the fork, clean it and grease it (it's a simple one), clean all the bits and then add the new ones. Or new old ones. Keep the front derailleur, as this is one of the more tricky things to find in the right size and the proper cable pull direction. 1998 Palisades Trails came with pretty cheap wheels with simple rims. You should also be able to find some nice wheels for a decent amount of money. Whatever parts you choose, add new cables and housing, as this makes a huge difference. Brake pads too. Those bikes had LX-copy brakes and they worked so and so. Other brakes would be a massive improvement.

Cheers!

Agree with the above advice.

Slightly plugging some bits I have for sale here, but I've a few items such as cranks, bottom bracket and more that are priced cheaply/some free that would get your bike running again. Check out my sale thread, and others too of course and I'm sure you'll find the bits needed.

Pace did a converter for that chainset I believe that allows you to run the crank arms with other rings. I used to have one . Might be worth considering if you want to keep the chainset, but with rings and the pace part, will probably work out more expensive than buying a full chainset.

I am a bit stunned that Pace did a converter for cheap Alivio cranks. I hate those cranks particularly because of their looks and weight, but otherwise I guess thy were kinda decent.

I have an XT rear mech that would work for you on this. £10 posted, let me know if interested. Most likely got a good condition Shimano 7 speed cassette and a SRAM chain in good order to match too if you can tell me your chain length. Change the inner cables over and if you buy a retro compact chainset, easily sourced on here or on eBay, that should sort you out :)

Cheers guys, my mate owns his own bike shop, has offered to replace most parts for around £100, I kinda wanted to do it myself I as I don't want him to feel he has to give me mates rates, I know running a bike shop dosen't have big margins, but I'll make it up to him, thanks for all the offers and advice guys really appreciated it
