Retro Newbie
hi was wondering,if anyone can help,i recently brought a bobcat with ali frame, and yellow forks .just wondered what year it is,wheels are spares ive put on.looking foward to restoring, and having a retro bike

the only alloy framed bobcat i can find is a 94 the 95 says tange (im assuming cromo) the catalogues are in german so its difficult but the 94 one says something about aluminium in the remmen section (i think that means frame.
welcome to retrobikes where you always need more than you can afford :D

Cro-mo is not alloy, its steel. A 95 bobcat is almost entry level & as the next 4-5 higher spec bike were still steel, I cant see any way for a bobcat to by alloy around this year. I would be guessing yours isnt till at least 99ish. What is the 3rd digit on the frame number (under bottom bracket/crank)

the alu ones were later iirc.

1997 perhaps? marin did a freak run of usually steel models in alu such as the palisades and hawk hill.

err.. yea i know cromo is a steel (chromium molybydenium)i diddnt suggest otherwise
sometime i wish people would read before commenting
i have re read the marin catalogue and the bobcat is definitely steel but the catalogues run out at 95

i had a 1995 bobcat trail

the badge stated tange "something"... but strangely the bike is much lighter than other Marins, and ligghter than my 2000 Muirwoods, they say the bobcat is quite low in the ranking, i'm not too sure as the muirwoods is quite high so wht was the bobcat so much lighter??
use the frame number to id the bike theres a great link on here, or have a look at mine

you can get a rough idea of age then goto the catalogues to confirm

the bobcat is definitely underated and i regret selling it!

Chromolloy is an alloy of Chromium, Molybdenum and Steel. And steel is also an alloy...
Pure Aluminium [Alu] is an element but is almost always alloyed with something else to give it the relevant characteristics, so 6xxx series aluminium is an aluminium alloy containing Magnesium and Silicon.
