The definition of what is retro can rage for ages with a healthy diversity of opinion and no clear outcome - it's easy to say that a 1989 Stumpjumper is retro and a 2007 one is not but inbetween there is a lot of blurring and it is where would a theoretical line (and it is theoretical) be drawn?

If only there was some way we could let people of the forum decide this, some kind of electronic vote system like a poll... ;)

Well alas. I may get kicked off this site. if retroness went to a poll. My frames are 91 But almost every thing on them is 07/08 :(
But as Wu said 'retro' is a state of mind too. Which I certainly am

See now, I'd argue that there are 'new' bikes that are retro just like Dualit toasters and modern Fender Stratocasters are retro.

The spirit is there but all the bits are different. ;)

Some cool bikes this month.

Retro to me is something that hearkens to days gone by, stylish lines, craftsmanship and fine touches etc. Y'know, something that has had a little bit of soul and thought thrown at it? A modern bike can be retro styled but an older bike already has that bit of magic that some of the newer bike builders aspire to. That goes for components too :)

I think the fact that we have such a diverse number of entries is great, you only have to look at how the numbers have grown from the early days to see how this reflects the growing retro movement and has benefited everyone..

Personally I am a bit of a purist and tend to vote for those bikes that are on the period correct side (though if you have to use something new to get it rideable then do it) but that’s just my opinion so that’s what I vote for. Some people who see retro as more of an ‘ethos’ thing might vote for on old frame with some newer kit the owner chose to prefer for whatever reason..

The reason we have a poll is so you guys can decide this, not a bunch of ‘judges’ who may have set opinions one way or the other. If someone is prepared to put their bike forward then they know they will be criticised by some, admired by others… but we all know it’s their bike and their build so we respect it in it’s own way…though we won’t give it our vote..

In the true british sense of taking part I love the fact we attract all these entries and long may it continue..

Second that.

I agree with Hilts when he wrote "I am a bit of a purist and tend to vote for those bikes that are on the period correct side (though if you have to use something new to get it rideable then do it)"
A retrobike has to bring a bit of history, or to show something quaint : a Merlin with elevated chainstays, mavic or campy parts…
A retrobike has to be before 1993-1994. But it's only my opinion.

Hard to vote :
I love :
the bushpig's Salsa Ti Prototype : the older titanium bike of the post I think.
the Hilts' 1992 Lemond Ti, for the Mavic items and the historic job
My bike for the 1990 frame and campy parts (  )
The Carsten's 1991 Merlin Elevator : I have never seen an elevated chainstays Merlin…

I think, I'm going to vote for Bushpig
