Some fantastic builds...and some pathetic ones too.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

We cant all afford Cook Brothers Racing, XTR, Ringle etc etc; but so long as our bikes put a smile on our face when we open the shed door, thats all that matters.

And this is the place to show off what makes us happy.

There is no such thing as a pathetic build.

I'm not sure if i Agree w/ this. If the entire bike is not retro why is it in BOTM?

Finally someone who gets it! :D

...Can't all afford Cook Bros? Thats not what I meant by pathetic.

Newer SID forks, newer XT and XTR, V-brakes, road slicks, so on so fourth. Lacks imagination, creativity, and resourcefulness.

The front runners are the front runners because they are obviously well thought out and have great attention to detail. Those builds took time and effort and it shows.

I know you guys get all huffy when I make posts like this. Just throwing my $.02 cents (or pounds...as it were :) ) into the ring. Take it at face value.

I understand what you mean, and I'm not wanting to cause friction. I can see, and agree, why the front runners are there, but just think it harsh saying some of the other guys rides are 'pathetic'.

I'll get of my soap box now ;)

Well as this is a 'beauty' contest then we should also look at the owners of such beauty. I not only voted for the bike but the owner too. An all round picture so to say. That was my problem too. As I know and like a good number of them. :D
So closed my eyes and picked one out. So next month will their be a carbon BOTM etc?

actually I have just fitted flat titanium bars to mine . :D

looks much better .

Sure it does. You shouldn't have fitted risers with barends. The Alarm sounded at the style police headquarters!

I agree with Eric in this. You don't have to use Cook, Grafton, etc. bling-bling parts to have a nice retro bike, or not even XT or XTR. One can build a great retro bike out of Deore LX M550 or equivalent stuff as well.
Naturally those mid-level parts are not as drool-worthy as the top-end stuff but still they're much more suitable in a vintage bike than new parts.

Putting on XT M760, XTR M970 or whatever new parts is not exactly retro. Anyone can get an old frame and build it up with a new group set. That doesn't require any work or patience, just visiting your LBS or Internet bike shop.

Same thing with the fork. Even if the new Rebas, Fox, etc. work worlds better than vintage Manitous and Mag 21 Rock Shoxs, they're not particulary good looking on the vintage bikes, making the bikes look like choppers with slackened angles and so on.

I think that those bikes shouldn't be in the BOTM since they're not really that retro, even if the frame is from the nineties. I'm not saying that I don't respect the owners or disvalue their love for their bikes, but frankly said, those bikes just don't fit the bill.

A lot of echoes of last months BoTM 'debate' on what constitutes retro and whether some bikes should be entered or not. The definition of what is retro can rage for ages with a healthy diversity of opinion and no clear outcome - it's easy to say that a 1989 Stumpjumper is retro and a 2007 one is not but inbetween there is a lot of blurring and it is where would a theoretical line (and it is theoretical) be drawn? It would be a real shame if entries in subsequent months fell because people were lead to believe that their bike is not 'worthy'.

Back on topic, it is fantastic to see such a super high quality, very individual month (30 entries, 19 of which have votes) and it will be fascinating to see which one 'wins'
