MacRetro chat and rides thread

well folks i built my first ss today , feels weird not having any gears lol . i'd get pictures up but it's a real shed lol

how long does it take to get used to a ss ? :D

SS either grows on you like fungus, or you spit it out like poison, or you take to it like ducks to water. I'm with the quacks, tried it in late 90's as a way of avoiding my mechanical ineptitude and still do it today. Also its contagious, most MacRetro do the SS thing now. Even planning to try a cyclo cross or two SS stylee

Best way to ride is full on, momentum is your friend, attack every hill, keep speed up and even be a little reckless. SS is the adrenalin xc sport but in a different way to DH, you get the blood pumping and the aggression rises :D

Knackering oh yes, but worth it definitely ;)

for me it was about 3 rides, kind of frustrating at first esp over technical up and downs but you soon get use to it and I would prob ditch gears for good on all my bikes if not for the fact that some bikes look better with a full groupset- I ran round a local trail with some steep climbs and set myself the challenge of getting round without touching, your legs will become much stronger and the silence is bliss

give us a picture, we demand some photos!

and as velo says attack those hills, nice watching your geared friends look at you with a look of panic as you shoot ahead on the big climb

As Velo and Gazz said single speed aint for everyone but it's great if you can get used to it, i've been riding my SSE3 for so long now having gears feels wierd  , as Gazz said it can be frustraiting trying to get going again on rough ground, also your geared mates will blow you away on fast road or open forest track sections, them in 44-11 and you twiddling away in 32-16  , but the simplicity, weightsaving, less to break, lack of mechanical noise and mainainance, and the hardcore feeling more than makes up for it.

Just make sure you have strong cranks and chainring bolts

Aslo if you get seriously into it you'll find yourself looking at bare frames and thinking "that'd make a great single speed"

BTW had a great ride round Pollock park thismorning  , just decided to go at midnight last night so was very last minute, seemed to be something going on as it was getting bussy as i left at 10.30, going to try and get back durring the week while i'm off work.

Also been bussy building up the LTS for Inner's, just need a cassette, a seat and a few other bits, now has a Fox shock on the rear which seems to work well.
