Jim, just be careful and find a way to protect the damper/piston shaft from the jaws of pliers. Ye don't want to put scratches/gouges on the shaft.
Remembered this Cannondale service manual PDF that I found a while ago on Sheldon Brown's site.

Has lots of info for identifying older Headshoks and then being in with a chance of doing some TLC on them.
