Yep, green Park pin tool that I used, mind you the top cap on mine wasn't very tight.

I'd seen the ELS mentioned on the Vintage Cannondale site but that's the first time I've seen a diagram of it. Where did you find the diagram, please? The elastomer/coil Fatty I have in bits has the long tapered coil spring with similarly tapered elastomer inside it. Think clubby had one like that on his retro Cannondale that he had to replace elastomer with a NOS one, I think.

OCP is correct. My original headshock elastomer was dust, so I replaced it with a coil elastomer hybrid spring from Dr Cannondale site. It was for a DD60 fork but compressed nicely to 50mm travel giving a bit of preload. Worked really well after that, but I was lucky my bearings were in good condition.

Jim, that cap will come off with a pin spanner, but on mine, it needed another specialist tool to remove the next part down. On your diagram I reckon it will need a tool to remove the top out bumper assembly. This will allow removal of the preload rod from the inner telescope and access to the elastomer.
Unfortunately you really need the correct tool for the particular fork as it is buried a couple of inches inside the tube. If Johns tool doesn’t fit (no jokes please) then it might be worth speaking to the Edinburgh bike coop in Edinburgh. They used to be a Cannondale service centre and one of the original mechanics still knows how to take them apart if you have the spring. He did mine for free, even though I offered to pay. Took back a slab of beer.

I looked into sorting the suspension on the one I had, you can get Alps rebuild kits from (Risse Racing?) In the states I think, but most of the seals etc are fairly standard if you know the sizes.
Then there's the Headshock... and mine was rusted solid.
The cost would have been more than I paid for the frame, you may remember I sold it for £35 posted or something like that, then it appeared the next day on eBay for £180 I think the guy got £35 For it in the end

Or is the swingarm like the more usual later one on my Super V 1000SL with the shock virtually horizontal?

clubby, my memory is telling me someone told me the guy at Edin Bike Co-op left and was working elsewhere but cannot remember where though. It is my memory I'm talking about so it could just be a load of pi.....

This is the one I sold that was then sold on again, Super V900...
Should be similar to your Rob, I think the only difference might be the rear shock, Fox Alps 4 or 5R.
