I think you are right, unfortunately that is what it's been. Having a constructive exchange of views takes effort and discipline. Preventing one is far easier and apparently amusing for some.
Agreed.
And I've never understood that trait in some - because they either don't agree with it, or don't like the debate they appear to think it shouldn't happen. Which seems an utterly pointless perspective, given the countless other threads that could be either read or created by those that find something boring - but hell, it's important that everybody else reading the thread, realise, precisely, how tedious some find it...

But no one is forced to either read or contribute.
Agreed.
Both FPsWM.
And some would do well to remember that it doesn't matter whether you've been here a few weeks, or a few months- it's more about what you post. I'd rather see considered debate than a bit of clique-y back-slapping that practically every thread ends up with, in off-topic.
Discussion on topics like this is never
really about consensus - it's about finding
some common ground, attempting
some empathy, and hoping at least some of the deliberations causes some people to at least pause for thought on their all-too-easily spouted rhetoric. Not clinging to your long-established views, in fear that something, once examined could cause the horror-of-horrors - the consideration that maybe some aspect of the topic could cause some people that maybe there's more they could know, and their existing dogma may not be so axiomatic.
I may not personally share that much of your opinion on the topic, but I see entirely nothing wrong with the way you've debated it.
