So one bike has inspired me to do three builds, which bike you ask, well it's the 93 Cindercone i've just got.
Part of why i wanted the Cindercone was some of the parts what were on it which i could use on the other Konas. And it also frees up some parts i was going to use on the 93 Explosif which can be used on Lazarus instead to resurrect it from the dead again.
So for the 93 Explosif the X-Lite titanium bars, XT Shifters and the Ritchey Logic brake levers are perfect with the levers and shifters being standard on the Explosif that year. The bars are a bonus but have also gave me an idea on what colour to have it powder coated if they can get a perfect match. Saying i don't have the funds for a 93 Hei Hei why not make it look like one which also may lead me down a rabbit hole of cost because i'm already thinking i'll need a titanium seatpost to match the bars and maybe a titanium stem
The other idea for the Explosif was to make a 1990 Explosif tribute bike which means a whole different set of parts for it
Back to the Cindercone, i've been after one for years and years now constantly getting outbid or they've just been miles away with no postage so to see this pop i had to take a chance and get it and as a bonus it had suspension forks which still work I'm keeping the forks on this because basically the Cindercone and Lavadome share the same frame so it'll be interesting see the difference between rigid P2's and suspension.
So the second to last photo is how i bought the Cindercone and the last is how i've mocked it up with some DX parts. The big problem with it, yep the seatpost is stuck but not just one there's another in there aswell i can see some temper tantrums happening getting them out
Which leads me onto Lazarus the Lavadome which i've owned since new this is the bike what made me love Konas so much.
Where do i start with the poor thing, actually i'm surprised it never phoned Kona to report me for abuse, this bike has took such a beaten over the years. The memory's come flooding back just looking around the bike all the dints and rewelds lol I'm sure it's thinking not again i've been chilled lying up in the loft for the past 12 years and now you want to build me up again
I'll go into more detail about the bike as i go along but the plan is to get it back to as close as possible and also if i can remember every part i had on when it was in its prime. So straight away i'm using the Sugino 500 cranks off the Cindercone they should be 450's but they'll do. I was using the carbon Easton bars on the 93 Explosif but i used to have them on the Lavadome bitd so they can go on. I done alot of upgrading to XT back then when i could afford bits so i've found some spare M735 parts i had and they can go on. I'm tempted to put XT V-brakes on because as soon as they came out i had them on the bike and this was how i dislocated my left shoulder testing them out in the street doing brake tests outside the house. Basically ride flat out till i was level with the gate post and slam both the brakes on, mark where i stopped, rinse and repeat after every half moon removed until none are left and they're at full power. Stopped dead, over the bars dislocated shoulder yep there powerfull, taxi to the hospital to get my shoulder put back in
Right enough waffling time to start the builds
