WOW! Thanks guys, really helpful. Questions have been sent.

Re: the Lava Dome. Thanks a lot but I love my Kilauea- Stevo is right about it being nimble and light. I just need a smaller one. I'm going to hold out for a 17" but appreciate I may be waiting a while.

Man I love this forum- fully of knowledgeable friendly people.

Won't be as light or responsive as the Kilauea though...

yep, but in the event of the blue kilauea being the wrong size, and 17" being a preference, its always an option (is complete bike as well)

Your absolutely right about it being an option, thanks. I'm going to swap all the bits over from my current Kilaeau anyway (xt 27 speed, p2s etc) so a complete bike isn't a selling point for me. I will then sell my 19" frame on here :D . Here it is. Although it has a few paint chips it is in good nick given the age.

Although 17" is the preference, it also needs to be a kilauea :) as I have been impressed with mine so far and I don't want to change too many variables as it then confuses my search again  .

In many ways the Kilauea is actually nicer than its Explosif counterpart - don't ask me why, but I had both and rode the Kilauea (above somewhere...) far more... :?

The Kilauea has now gone to my daughter and she is just as delighted with the upgrade from her Lavadome as I was.

Someone has offered me a 1997 17" explosif on here but it's too much for me atm. What year was your exploif Stevo? Were both bikes fully rigid or hard tails? Did the explosif just feel too stiff. the geometry is pretty similar no?

Ben

I ride a 18" Kilauea & agree that they are (imo) a nicer ride than the Explosif, could just be down to whatever tube set Kona were using for any given year. Mines a '98 with the Reynolds 631 tubing.

Good luck with your hunt for 17 inches...

I have three of each, and the Explosifs are obviously better, but there isn't all that much in it and in any case the comparison varies from year to year. You won't often find a size 17 1997 Explosif, so I would advise you to buy it and cancel Christmas. Christmas is just a passing thing.

Lol! We'll see how this auction goes first! The 1997 is full columbus max tubing no? Is that the pick of the bunch or is the 1998 better?

Hmmm, who need Christmas anyway. But.... this bike started out as just a comuting/pub bike  lol.
