klein bike year and serial number

Retro Newbie
hello all, i'm in need of some thoughts on a project bike i've been able to recently acquire...here goes : i'm trying to place a date on a Klein Rascal. the only thing coming close to being the serial # begins with the letters 'TG' followed by 3digit number, this being located under one of the rear dropouts (i'm hoping the 'TG' does'nt stand for 'Trek Group' lol) but i'm not even sure this is the serial, it also has a very very small 'K' Klein head-logo... During the first years of Trek entering the picture, did they , still produce and remain true to the elements Klein is known for? I'm guessing this bike to be '96, but part of me kind of suspects it could be earlier...not saying it's a relic or even built in Chehalis but i'm confused ...here are some thoughts: first off i currently ride and beat around on a late 90's Klein Pulse, that being said if i sit these bikes next to one another it's almost shocking how different they are...my Pulse is right around the late 90's before the new font was used on the lettering and in defense of Trek this Pulse is still a dream to ride. SO back to the Rascal 1. the word Klein is is not in block letters, it's the 2nd font...but the word Rascal is still old-school 2. fat, well-built dropouts 3. Internal cables 4. what appear to be older more thorough parts...Odysee headset, Cook's cranks, tapered titanium shock, Ritchey seat, Mavic rims ((it just gives off an older vibe)) and mind you i'm constantly attemping to compare with bikes i'm seeing pictures of on-line...part of thinks this could be pre-Trek or at least the very beginning of the whole Trek deal maybe 94? I'm new here on the forum and i'm sorry if i've rambled...anyone out there have any insight? Thanks everyone...

From what I remember "TG" stands for Top Gun, which is in essence the Rascal, it's name was changed due to copyright issues (that crappy movie with Tom Cruise). It may then be followed by the frame size, i.e. 18, 20... The next series of 3-4 digits is the manufacture date. For example my Fervor (also a Rascal frame) is 1293-December '93. Finally, the last numbers is the frame number. If you can post a pic I can tell you with confidence.

hey i'm thankful for your response...it's been helpful. i'm going to try getting that pic up in the next day or so, glad to have you check it out. as i mentioned it does'nt appear to be a serial# it reads :TG111(k) it's all i can find>>>i definitely think you're right about the pic though i'm gonna post some ...can i just add, the most confusing part about all this is that somehow i've come under the impression that a Klein really is'nt that old unless the decals are block lettered? I'm comparing this bike to the older ones through photos and it's almost exactly the same in terms of mechanics and welds but the fact that it has the newer font lettering is throwing me off, as if maybe this was the year they first started the new letters (oh and by the way i left out that this bike is ''debossed'' painted...my newer Klein has stickers i've finally managed to track a place out of state who repair old suspension, upon dismantiling the front end for shipping i was going to look in hidden spots for another serial# ok thanks again look forward to hearing from you on that pic...this forum is awesome
