My latest British acquisition

This appeared on eBay a while back and titled as a road bike, just from the little thumbnail of an image I could see it was not a road bike so I enquired about possible postage.

The buyer offered to deliver it at cost so I put a bid in, and was the only bidder 👍 then the seller realize how far he had to drive so offered to post it instead.

Well it arrived.... And it's beautiful

For those that don't know Joe waugh he was an Olympic road cyclist and won a gold in the commonwealth games, and owned m.steel cycles up north.

From what I can gather Dave Yates built frames for him with either m steel or Joe Waugh decals.

So no surprise to me that this frame construction is just like my diablo in the fact that it's got fast back seatstays and the ludo piece cable stop.

It has Reynolds 653 tubing and drop outs, strangely doesn't have a frame number so hard to date but I'm thinking 1992 with the campag kit. The paint is original and in really great condition.

Story is that the seller of this got it from his grandads estate after he passed who was a roadie at heart, this would explain the choice of euro kit.

Sadly the shifters and cantilevers were not campagnolo, shifters were grip shift which appeared to have replaced failed bullet shifters, if you look at the brake levers you can see where the bullet shifters were built in but no longer there 😞.

The cantilevers were tektro, back then I imagine they were a cheaper alternative to the campagnolo version but similar looks.

Shame, I'm sure some nice campagnolo brake levers and cantilevers will come along eventually, and I'm going to have to change the stem as it's a bit low for me plus the bars too as the snob in me won't allow kalloy no matter how light 🤣

Wowsers another beauty enters @retrobikeguy cavern of retrolovelyness.

@ferrus will be able to help you out with identification as Campagnolo never put model names or codes on their MTB parts.

Looks like you have Record OR brake levers. Possibly Icarus chainset and derailleurs, although the barrel adjuster on the rear mech is throwing me a bit. The Cantilevers are Campagnolo too with the brake stud clamp assembly. The black detailing is throwing me without looking up old catalogues... EDIT! Just seen your comment regarding Tektro. Did think the slot/finish looked off/cheap!!!

The RB archive should help, but suspect @ferrus will come to the rescue!

Yeah, I always found the campagnolo hierarchy confusing, just wish they had a model/group name on them but I guess they could use whatever they wanted from the entirety of the range and make you believe it's part of the group.

Beautiful . Looks really clean too .

Little change then...... 😁

1000013011.jpg

Firstly... Tyres, it had some minty avocet slicks when it came to me and they were great to ride on - very fast. Roadie fast.....

Changed to ritchey z-max in black wall now and I quite like it with the silver rims, I'm a tanwall guy normally so I know they're a later tyre but what do you think?

1000013015.jpg

Next was the saddle and seat post.
I had the same but longer seat post so swapped it out and added a rolls in a similar ish colour I had kicking around.... Should I go back to the white turbo??? 🤔

Next... I said I was gonna do it.

Stem... A nice roller stem, YES it's heavier than it's predecessor but it enables me to ride the bike in more comfort, and a Reynolds 501 bar in a matching colour way...... Ooh, suits you sir!

1000013012.jpg

While Taking of the brake levers I noticed they had a little bit taken off the inside 😞 sadly this means they will never be reunited with the bullet shifters ..... #mumblemumblewhymumble

A little extra touch is the bottle cage with an M.steel bottle

1000013013.jpg

It rides really well, better for me now the front end has some rise but considering it looked long on the top tube .... It's good 😊
