I need a 8 speed sachs freewheel BSC thread
they are pretty tricky to source (or very expensive on ebay)

As the final cog on 8 speed sachs freewheel is actually two cogs bound together, I wonder if the freewheel body is actually identical to a 7 speed one ?
Designers would have just invented this "ploy" to be able to add another speed

I have got several maillard freewheels ( later taken over by sachs - so maillard cogs can be uses on sachs frewheels) but no 7 speed one
The 8 speed is about 33mm thick
The 6 speed is 27mm thick
Can I be smart and use a 7 speed body ?

I know these freewheels for 130mm hubs are not vey common but I have found Mavic 501 "hubbed wheels" with decent mavic rims and I wish to use these !

8 speed blocks regularily pop up at the classic bike fairs in the Benelux, usually for very reasonable prices.

Never used a 8 speed freewheel, by then I was onto cassettes. But I have used 7 speed maillard freewheels, and the 7 is just the same body as what was called compact 6 ie 5mm spacing with a small double cog instead of the single on the 6.
So, if 8 used the same body, it would have to be a triple cog.

The French framebuilder Gilles Berthoud gives the answer in two pictures:

8 speed:

You can see in these two pictures that the difference is in one of the middle sections. So the body is different.

many thanks ;)
the body is probably 30mm thick ( as 6 is 27 and 8 is 33mm !)

I've got a few NOS ones. What ratios do you need?
