Is it worth putting NOS kit on?

I personally think your a bit silly if you go and plop a fresh, new pair of white porcs on a bike and go ride them.

Well, the world is full of idiots I guess. :?

Going on how soft they are and the prices they have been reaching on eBay lately i'd say it works out at around £1 per mile :D

i just think of what a man whose job it is to take old mint condition cars and turn them into circuit racers says " there will always be that one owner from new car at the shows that only sees 5 miles a year dont worry about it "

its better that the world sees it than to keep it hidden

if this stuff was so precious it wouldnt have been sold in the first place

That's not a very good comparison at all. There is an unlimited number of rare race cars and parts because we re-make them from scratch. Anything from a Ferarri 512 upright to a Bugatti Brescia engine block can be remade. We have a vast range of period tyres to choose from, anything and everything is and will alwYs be available at a price. And that's the rub- ecconomics. No one would have a XTR 900 rear mech made to replace a damaged or worn item but you can smash an £8million 250 GTO into a ball and completely rebuild it for £800,000

take todays work for example. I've just finished a lovely full race head for an Alfa- 100 hours plus of tiresome machining and measuring and polishing. Now eventually some muppet will miss a gear change and wreck it. But unlike the 100 plus hours that I put into my Pace, when it does get wrecked £4,250 will buy you another race head. If someone wants to give me that amount of money I will happily ride it to destruction for you.

si you have missunderstood . i mean take normal coveted cars and put them out to race . many believe they should stay as concours and not have their 50 year old unwelded floors cut out . what i mean is that unless there are only a couple in the world there will be more than a handful holding onto what is really mass produced stuff on the basis of presevation . for every car that gets the historic treatment and thrown around a forest there is another sat in a garage . its not the biggest concern in the world

by all means save a few things worth saving but so much of this stuff is less than 20 years old . in the history of the bicycle its new

I'm affraid that this is one of those 'heated disscussions' with no real right or wrong,a bit like politics and religion :? Anyway its reared its ugly head again,if you want garage queens, fine and if not, well I can fully understand that as all my bikes get ridden but it is nice to see well preserved origional condition stuff
I could never do it though as the temptation would be too great!

Eh, we're into old bicycles, go figure... ;* )

NOS is not NOS once you buy it, after that it is second hand, like new.
Mainly because it is then not new, still old or original, but certainly not stock anymore.
New Old Stock / Not One Scratch - take your pick, hehe...

hear hear

If I buy NOS stuff then it’s my prerogative to use it. I see no point in bits just sitting around looking pretty. If I want to pay the extra ££ to get the NOS stuff as opposed to the nearly new bits then so be it.

I ride all my bikes, and treat them all the same. I do not go out to deliberately damage parts, but sometimes it happens, and yes it is a pity. Keeping things NOS is fairly pointless unless they are the ultra rare stuff. I’ve just happily bolted a pair of NOS Onza OZ-TI bar ends to may RTS, and it will get used just the same as everything else. I looked for ages trying to find the bar ends that were in good condition rather than NOS but nothing came up; it was the last part which prevented me from riding the bike and now I’m happy. I even binned the original box it came in (but it’s retrievable for all you garage queens).

Thing is what I still dont understand is...

We all agree modern bikes ride so much better than retro bikes. Parts function so much better, and its also more cost effective (cheap Deore mechs work real well and disc brakes are awesome blah blah blah).

So why pay top dollar for retro stuff and ride it hard (or even at all in anger?)

Still seems silly.
