Insurance

I want to insure my Cannondale. Problem is, I bought a base model many moons ago as new old stock, promptly took everything off it and rebuilt it using decent parts. Which I don't have the receipt for. I'm not even sure if I have the receipt for the bike. I think full replacement value (once you've taken account of the changing times, new for old) would be in excess of £2k - its got stuff like an S-works chainset/XTR bottom bracket, XT all round etc).

Any clues as to who to ensure it with on a specialist insurance policy?

this is what i have done

get it down your local LBS and ask them to do a valuation on it. this will negate the need for a receipt

ask your contents insurance what their policy on bikes is. Mine is new for old, luckily, and doesn't take into account depreciation. It may require an addition to the policy (my Genesis did) but unlike specific bike insurance it won't cost an extra £100+ a year. I have yet to have my other 7 bikes valued, but they will be and added to the policy. at the moment they are valued between £300 - £500 each

I was thinking about this today. I idly added up how much it would cost to rebuild my main bike from scratch. Pretty mind boggling the figure you come up with after a while. And I don't imagine trying to convince an insurance loss adjuster that something like a headset can really be worth well over £100 would be easy.

I know the feeling. I guess I was very fortunate that I worked for a big bike shop when I built mine, although I suspect I gave them back in sales more than they gave me in salary that summer!!
