I think I bought a Zaskar =D

Retro Newbie
A friend stopped by yesterday and before he even said a word I proclaimed SOLD! I spied this in the back seat of his car from 20 feet away. He has a habit of showing up with things I want. Anyways...I'm not 100% sure it is a Zaskar. It has some pretty neat bits attached to it even though the overall condition of the bike is poor. The serial # reads like it's a 91 and there are no letters. I have yet to find any stampings indicating what material it's made from. Would you all be kind enough to let me know what you think of this bike? Can anyone id the front canti's? Thanks.

Looks like a Zaskar.. Should say 6061 on the dropout. Also the serial will be there too. it'll be 8 numbers probably saying **91****

(Month Year Made No.)

Yep that looks like a zaskar to me.

Front canti's are Onza HO ( check them for cracks as they're known for it).
Also got a nice set of Bullseye cranks too.

Nice find

Thanks for the replies. I looked for the 6061 on the dropout and didn't see it. I haven't taken the wheel off yet to really inspect it. And thanks for the id on the brakes. The other side is indeed cracked. I have some other brakes that are suitable for now and I have machinist friends that have offered to make things for me so maybe I'll have one of them whip one out. Looks pretty simple. Pretty happy about the cranks (even though they are ugly) 'cause they are worth a lot more than I payed for the bike! Would it be a sin to refresh the paint and re-sticker them? I have noticed the stickers are available.

Could be a Pantera AL... My 91 Pantera looks identical to a Zaskar, even down the flat GT logo on the back of the top tube.

+1!!

The Pantera first appeared in the 1992 and had a flat end cap and a rear u-brake. As far as I know it was made from 7000 series alloy rather than 6061.

All subsequent non Zaskar frames like the Avalanche AL etc had the curved end cap.

I suspect that your Pantera is actually from the 92 model year, but the production code will say 1991 as it will of course have been manufactured for release in late 1991.

The Pantera was originally painted red with black decals and a Suntour groupset. So painting it wouldn't be a sin at all, if indeed it turns out to be a Pantera rather than a Zaskar.

Nah! The end of the tube is more oval on a Pantera.
;)
