My lovely 2001 Trek Fuel 100 died a few weeks ago and Trek have agreed to send a replacement frame (modern too, sorry), but they require the BB shell to be returned from the old bike to prove it's not a scam. The bike shop are supposed to do this, but they are some distance from me and I needed the bike stripping down ASAP. Because the owners know me, they agreed to let me take the bike home, strip it down and then cut up the frame.

I hope non of you have to go through what I did today. :cry:

upside.. you've a rear triangle and shock thingy you can sell

The shock has to go back to Trek too as they are sending me the new one that suits the new frame. The rear triangle etc. I'm not sure if there will be much call for, I've never seen another of these bikes on a UK ride and only once seen one for sale on the net.

As for shouting at it? Never, it was a lovely light weight bike and I loved every ride that I took it on...until it broke!

What was actually wrong with the frame, before cutting the bottom bracket out, it's not obvious from the pictures?

Ahh, that sucks.. try eBay for the rear triangle, and Ti rocker? you've got smething brand new out of it though, right?

Something brand new that needs lots of things brand new to get it going. Kerching, kerching.

eBay I'm sure will be the best option, certainly I have nothing to lose by sticking up there.

what was wrong with the frame?

having worked in the bike trade myself i understand why they want things back, a few years ago when giant made the martin hawyes trials frames they warrantied a lot of them for broken disc mounts but alot of the frames ended up back in circulation as they had a very lapse warranty dept. basically they either didn't get sent back and the shop got a hack frame or the rep picked them up and cut the remains of the disc mount off and then re sold them!

the disc mount on them was an xc mount with no gussetting but giant expected most of the bikes to used as trials bikes as they were designed for so expected magura rim brakes to be used so didn't worry about it having an xc mount, but people used them for dirt jumping aswel and fitted disc brakes . . . quite large ones! then the mount cracked so they then wanted warranty on the frame! but as a result of being very lapse in their warranty dept the frames sometime ended up getting warrantied a couple of times by mistake!! that's why they like to confirm stuff that is faulty isn't being sold on. also it gives them a record of the frame number which is good for identifying dodgy batches and common faults etc.

shame to see it being done though.
