Thats what I would call a good 'explorer bike'. Something that you can go all day on and seek out some nice unexplored roads somewhere.

Something you can't do on a 2008 carbon thing with a bum-slicing seat and scary light wheels as I've found to my bank balances disagreement.
Funny how you see so many of these things going 'as new' on eBay so often.

Don't let anyone tempt you with sub 1300g wheels and high spoke tensions. They will ruin you. Good old Open Pros is where its at.

I have allways liked Basso bikes.

Here is picture from Milan bike show where they presented 1990 bikes.
There is similar frame, behind that lovely mtb.

Which Modolo brakes are mounted on the frame?

Thay are actually branded 'Mavic' if that helps.
I'm going to change them, may not be fitting the Veloce brakes pictured
but going for some dual pivots which might have a chance of actually stopping the bike.

Mavic brakes were produced by Modolo. I personally prefer single pivot, I tried double pivots once but discarded them after a few rides. Way too harsh in stopping, they slowed me down too much in descents.

That's what I said earlier. It's all brand new and unused kit.

It's not original to the frame - downtube levers (poss Mavic)
and brakes (deffo Mavic).
What I got with the frame his father had bought already to
upgrade the bike. It was his pride and joy. Then he died
without finishing the project

I promised Ben that I would build it sympathetically and never
sell it. I think it would be good to do the Manchester - Blackpool on
in July. If I can get fit enough, that is.

Mavic had some very fine downtube levers in those times. Made by Simplex, the retrofriction version. These snippets of info are very important to date the frame&components. I'll go back to some files to check, but these two parts on the original frame are not from the last generation of Mavic kit (the generation used by Lemond) but more from the generation of Mavic kit used by Sean Kelly in his KAS years.

Had me a check yesterday Ivo.

The brakes are indeed Modolo.
Branded Mavic but with Modolo on the blocks.
The shift levers are in fact Simplex.
Non-index and beautifully machined.

Do I take it these may be 'sought after' parts?
