How hard (moreso costly) is it to put a modern drivetrain on a vintage mtb?

Not for exactly what I want as I stated already.

Rigid frame (those cost thousands for ready made gravel bikes), very low gearing. It is either one or the other for that price bracket of 'ready to dance' bikes.
For 400 you could definitely get a rigid steel mtb with low gearing??

Where? Maybe they exist somewhere but they are very rare. I am talking about ones ready for sale with everything. It looks much easier to get a 200ish retro bike and spend 100 or so to put the shigano (or equivalent) cranks discussed earlier on and 34 freewheel.

The bikes on here are predominantly mountain bikes. You're going about this an awfully convoluted way. 400 quid would definitely get you a good serviceable bike, something like a robust 3x9 XT kitted machine with a crmo frame is definitely in your budget range with money to spare should you need to make some adjustments along the way.

Sir. You seem to be making this far harder for yourself than it is.....and possibly far more expensive.

Firstly, as has been said above, pretty much any old frame with a 135mm and 68mm bb shell will do what you want.

Secondly, why spend loads on modern stuff for it when a simple 8 /9 speed cassette and triple front will give you all the gearing your ever going to need.....unless your cycling up walls for fun.!

If you really want 1x then why not get a chainset and just put one ring on and the biggest rear 9 speed you can cheaply find.

I used this for several years....think it cost £300 tops second hand parts! It flew up hills and cruised pretty well too.

If you read through the pages I had settled on an old frame with 3x9 just as you suggest.

I plan on old frame and sugino impel (or similar) as was advised, and 34 freewheel.
